Of Thee I Sing - A letter to My Daughters by Barack Obama
This short book features a brief profile of thirteen Americans that have had an impact on our lives. The brief prose and beautiful illustrations by Loren Long provide inspirational stories that children of all ages will listen to and learn from. This will be a classic for many years to come.  See my full review - click here.

Welcome Little One Keepsake Baby Book by Kristin Baird Rattini
This keepsake baby book published by National Geographic is exquisite.  It is unlike the bland keepsake books that are most common.  It is unique modern....captivating.  As you would expect from a National Geographic publication, it features striking pictures of baby animals throughout the book.

In Daddy's Arms I am Tall by Javaka Steptoe
This picture-book is a collection of poems celebrating African American fathers. The art is captivating and will be enjoyed by adults and children alike.  Adults and older children will enjoy this book.  Great reviews.

Ragged Dick Or Street Life in New York with the Boot Blacks by Horatio Alger
This series of books about a poor boy in New York at the turn of the century (That's the 19th to 20th century) will capture the imagination of any young boy.  My son absolutely loved these stories and they were sometimes hard to get.  I took a couple out of the Newark public library - editions that obviousy been there for years and survived being removed because they remained popular and bought one of these that are still in print.  Still getting great reviews at Amazon today.  Charming, moral stories but told in a way tha boys connect to.

Assembly Required: A Journal of My Son's First Son by Anne Lamont
Anne Lamont is a very popular autor who writes about her own spiritual journey and family.  This book about her nineteen' year old son and his grilfirend's first son during their first year gets excellent reviews.  i haven't read the book but the reviews suggest that she discusses how she navigates through so many of the grandparent experiences - especially with first grandchildren.  It can be difficult to deal with not being the parent - whether it be everyday or big issues, but there are also special joys without having the responsibilities of parenthood.  Anne Lamont covers it all.

The Daring Book for Girls by Mariam Peskowitz
This is highly recommended by grandmothers at Amazon.  For girls about 10 - 13 seems like a fun, informative book.
